Answer:

Both shared a good friendship with each other. The second phase was the time when the author and the grandmother moved to the city to live with author's parents. This was a turning-point in their friendship because now they 'saw less of each other'. The third phase was the time the author joined University.

Answer:

The portrait of a lady is a real life experience writte by an Indian author Khushwant Singh which describes the changing relationship with his grandmother throughout is life.

When he was a child, he used to stay with his grandmother while his parents worked in the city. The grandmother was a religious woman and was always dressed in white. She used to wake him up, feed him, dress him ad take him to school. The grandmother would sit in the nearly temple reading scriptures while the child would be taught by a priest. They used to feed the stray dogs stale chapathis on their way back home.

In the second phase, the child and the grandmother was called to the city by the parents. The child went to an English school by a motor bus. The grandmother could no longer accompany him to school and help him with studies even though she used to dress him up and feed him as usual. She was disheartened that there was o reliious teachings in his school. She disapproved of him learning music which she thought was fit for beggars and harlots. She turned to feeding breadcrumbs to the sparrows in the city.

In the third phase, the narrator starts going to the university. He was given a separate room of his own and no longer shared a room with his grandmother. Even though there was no communication between them, their bond of love remained strong. The grandmother rarely talked to anyone and spend her days sitting at her spinning wheel, reciting prayers or telling  her beads of rosary.

The grandmother came to see him off at the station while he was going abroad for further studies. She said a silent goodbye and did not show any emotions.
