I had the opportunity to visit Third World Press, the most successful African-American publishing company in the world, and meet renowned poet and founder, Haki Madhubuti. For more than 40 years, Third World Press has brought books to the reading public that encourage creativity, inspire intellect, engender pride and spur engaged and informed critical debate over issues of race, culture, politics, and social health.

While I was there, I also purchased a few books (Liberation Narratives, by Haki Madhubuti; Yellow Black, by Haki Madhubuti, and The Tiger Who Wore White Gloves, by Gwendolyn Brooks). I definitely recommend getting a copy of “The Tiger Who Wore White Gloves,” by Gwendolyn Brooks. The title captured my interest because I thought it would be a cute story about a tiger daring to be different through fashion, but it turned out to be about embracing and being proud of what’s intrinsic to you. It’s not just a children’s book, I think there is a value to this short poem that could have various meanings to diverse people at all stages of life.
