Although 2/3rd of Earth is covered with water, very little water is actually available for humans for regular use.
Out of the complete water available on the Earth, 2.5% is present as fresh water, almost 68.7% is present as frozen as snow and as ice, and just one-third of the water is stored below the ground and is available as groundwater.
Although it is remarkable that the living species in the whole world are sustaining on such small amount of available water. Although there is no distinctive global scarcity of water, the survey shows that almost 1/5th of the global population is living in areas where there is a physical scarcity of water.
The uneven distribution of water across the globe, the increase in pollution levels in water, increased wastage, and unsustainable management, and lack of needed infrastructure like dams, reservoirs etc, do not allow effective using of the available water and thus, causes a water shortage.
