The total number of blue marbles is 6 times that of red marbles. If the total marbles are 280, find the total number of blue and red marbles​

Let R = the number of red marbles.

Then I can take the information in the problem and express B, the number of blue marbles, as: B = 3R - 6.

Adding them, we have:

R + B = 62

R + 3R - 6 = 62

4R - 6 = 62

Add 6 to each side of the equation:

4R - 6 +6 = 62 + 6

4R = 68

Divide each side of the equation by 4:

R = 17 … the number of red marbles.

So B = 62 - 17 = 45
