The track of motorcycle-race is circular and unbanked. There are two bikers on the road one travels along a path of greater radius than the other. They both lean toward the centre at the same angle. Which one completes the lap first?

The biker who travels along a path of a shorter radius is the one who completes the lap first.

  • The expression for the angle of the banking road is given by

        Tan \theta=\frac{v^{2} }{rg}

        where v = maximum speed of the vehicle

                    r = radius of the path the vehicle is traveling through

                    g = gravitational pull

                    \theta = angle of leaning towards the center

  • From the above formula, the maximum speed is directly proportional to the radius, hence the vehicle covering larger radii would be required to have a higher speed to cover the distance at the same time but if the speed of both the motorcycles is the same then the one who covers shorter radii will cover the lap first.
