It is because of the presence of thick barks and leaves that helps them to store water for a longer time as summers are relatively dry, and this water is transmitted to entire plant body for its growth and development.

Explanation:

The Mediterranean region refers to those areas that lie between the latitude of 30 and 45 in both the hemisphere. The summers here are hot and dry, whereas the winters are relatively moist and wet.

This region receives a sufficient amount of rainfall, that allows the plants and trees to get adjust to the dry summers by having thicker barks and their leaves are mostly coated with wax. This enabled the trees to decrease the rate of transpiration process. So, the water remains in the plant body, that is transmitted to the entire body and the roots, thereby developing long roots that are capable of reaching the water that is below the root level. This type of plant is also known as xerophytic plants.
