These are the most important pigments involved in the basic photochemical reaction that sustains life.At least nine types of chlorophylls have been identified so far – chlorophylls a. b. c. d and e. Bacterio Chlorophylls a and b and the chlorobium chlorophylls 650 and 660p.m

2. Carotenoid pigments: -

These are lipid compounds ranging in colour from yellow to purple. They are widely distributed in both plants and animals. They are also present in microorganisms including red algae, cyanobacteria, photosynthetic bacteria, fungi, etc.

3. Phycobilins: -

These are found only in algae. There are two types of pycobilins – the Phycoreythrin (red) and Phycocyanin (blue) these pigments are strongly associated with a protein and consequently it is difficult to isolate the pigments in the pure state.
