The two members of group 14 in the periodic table are carbon (atomic no. 6) and silicon( atomic n. 14) . (a) write electronic configuration of both element (b) Deduce their valencies .(c) Name the eliment which is more electronegative answer with proper reasion .(d)find out whether these element are metal or non metal ? give reasons for your answer.

a) electronic configuration
carbon = 2,4 silicon = 2,8,4
b) silicon as well as carbon has valency 4. this is because they have four valence electrons in there outermost shell. as it is difficult to give aor take 4 electrons these elements share electrons.
c) carbon is more electronegative than silicon because carbon forms more stable bonds than silicon.
d) carbon is a non metal whereas silicon is metalloid. carbon shares it's electrons whereas silicon even donates or take 4 electrons from others. it even shares electron like carbon. thus carbon is a non metal and silicon is a metalloid.
hope it helps!!

Explanation:
Electronic configuration of carbon (Z = 6) = 2, 4. Electronic configuration of silicon (Z = 14) = 2, 8, 4. Both these elements belong to the same group (14) since their atoms have four valence electrons. Both of them are non-metals. However, the element silicon is less non-metallic since this character decreases down a group, It may be regarded as a semi-metal.
