Two scientists who worked at different times are Henry Cavendish and William Ramsay. Cavendish in the 1700s discovered that air contains 21 percent oxygen which proves air is a mixture.
A century later, William Ramsay discovered the presence of Inert gases in the air. This way gradually the theory was established.
