The Untouchability Crimes act was implemented in the year 1955. Though untouchability was abolished by the Article 17 of the Constitution of India, the evil practice still persists because of the systemic character of it.

As a result, the Parliament of India enacted the ‘Untouchability Offences Act’ in 1955. An amendment was made and the act was renamed in 1976 as the Protection of Civil Rights (PCR) act.
