D. stop the spread of communism in the region

Explanation:

  • The Cold War which officially began in the year 1947 with the Truman doctrine theorising “containment” policy, had major impact in Latin America, regarded by the US  to be a whole  part of the Western Block, also known as the “free world.”
  • The Western Bloc was an alliance of nations allied with the US, and resisting the Soviet Union & the Warsaw Pact in the Cold War. The Soviet Union was named the Eastern Bloc. The governments and the press of the West Bloc preferred to call themselves the "Free World" while the Eastern Bloc  was referred to as the "Communist  World."
  • Fighting communism was the party-line argument defending the aggressive US existence in Latin America.  As such, the US regarded it a priority to get rid of any influences from the communist Eastern Block.
