they are the ratios of sides on a triangle. for example sin is opposite / hypotenuse and the opposite side will only reach as far as the length of the hyptotenuse. when it is this length the ratio equals 1, since they are the same. the negative 1 is the coordinate system (up or right are positive, down or left is negative) in relation to the origin
