Located at the level of the twelfth rib on each side of the vertebral column, the kidneys are each about 12 cm in length and 150 g in weight.

In spite of their considerably small size, the kidneys receive massive blood flow at about 1.2 litres/min in an adult. The main action of the kidneys is excretion which is the removing of waste products notably urea, uric acid, and creatinine from the body.

They are also regulatory organs helping maintain the correct acid-base status, ion concentrations and osmolality of the body by regulating the content and quantity of the body fluids.

On an average, adult kidneys are found to produce around 2 litres of urine in a day.
