There is a concept called elementary dam while designing a dam. This concept is used to design a dam. It is basically in the shape of triangle in the similar fashion as the water exert force on the wall which is retaining against it. Thus in order to be safe from overturning and sliding dam is designed first as elementary profile and later it is modified as required thus the base is board and top is thin as per elementary profile.
