The walls of a dam are much wide at bottom because the pressure of water is very high in bottom. The
dams are so designed due to this
reason.
Thus we can say that it is very important to understand how the pressure of water before constructing San.

The pressure produced by water is  directly proportional to the the depth of the water

Explanation:

  • The wall of the dam is mainly made to restrict the water from flowing from one side of the dam to the other side of the dam. As a result of this if the wall of the dam is broad at the base then there should be sufficient amount of pressure that should be resisted by that dam.
  • The pressure of the water increases with increasing depth of the water. So the lower part of the dam is broad at the base
