If the soil has a higher percentage of silt and clay-sized particles then the water holding capacity of the soil incresaes.
The small particles like the clay and the silt have a large surface area than the large sand particles.
The large surface area of the clay and silt helps them to hold greater amount of water. The clayey soil has greater water holding capacity.
