When the grandmother died thousands of sparrows gathered near the dead body. There was no chirruping as they kept silent. The author's mother threw crumbs of bread to them but they did not notice them. As soon as the grandmother's corps was carried off, they flew away quietly. Thus the sparrows their grief.
