The people listen to mythological stories, good speeches by eminent philosophers or scholars. But the people go willingly, voluntarily rather than being forced by influential persons.
People do not believe in blind superstitions. The interact with divine persons to keep themselves clear in their conscience and not because some one tells them to. People are happier interacting with God and Godly people rather than being forced into that.
