The most typical one is commonly referred to as 'sea level'. At that level, 1 kg of mass (1 kgm) weighs 1 kg of force (1 kgf). And that works out to 9.8 Newtons (N). So, whatever M is in kg of mass, the weight at sea level is the same in kg of force, and would be multiplied by 9.8 to get Newtons.
