The whales and dolphins often comes up to the water surface they even release a fountain of water sometimes while moving upward why do they do so?

The part from which whales and dolphins releases water is called blowhole ... Blowholes help them to breathe.... They releases water and then takes in oxygen as they don't have gills and have blowholes instead.
