the work done by a force is defined as w= f ×S in a certain situation f and s are not zero but the work done is zero from this we conclude that :

Let's say we have a block and we have to displace it in perpendicular direction and force is being applied parallel to block no work will be done as both have an angle of 90 degree between them which is why work Zero.I think displacement will not be opposite to force as it will be negative work instead.
