The world's biggest freshwater lake is superior

Some other knowledge --

Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes of North America, the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area, and the third largest freshwater lake by volume.

Area: 82,103 km²

Max. depth: 1,333 ft (406 m)

Temperature

While the temperature of the surface of Lake Superior varies seasonally, the temperature below 110 fathoms (660 ft; 200 m) is an almost constant 39 °F (4 °C). This variation in temperature makes the lake seasonally stratigraphic.

Climate

Weather and climate is moderated by Lake Superior, winter is warmer and summers are cooler. Winter temperatures rarely dip below -30°F/-35°C, inland temps however can go well below -30°F/-35°C. During most winters the lake can become 40-95% covered with ice.

Pollution

Because Lake Superior is nourished by forests and watered by streams, changes on the land become changes in the lake. We find algae blooms in Lake Superior bays, decreasing clarity in the western arm of the lake, contaminated sediment in the Duluth-Superior harbor and toxic contaminants building up in the food chain.

History

Lake Superior first took shape about 1.2 billion years ago as a result of the North American Mid-Continent Rift, which carved an arc-shaped scar stretching from Kansas through Minnesota.
