Explanation:

1. The Himalayas extend in an arc shape from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh covering a length of about 2500 km. The width of this mountains decreases from 400 km in the west to about 150 km in the East. The traditional limits of the Himalayas are the Indus valley in the west and the Brahmaputra in the East.

The Himalayas consists of three parallel ranges Himadri , Himachal and Siwalik ranges - with deep narrow valleys between them.

The North most range is known as the greatest Himalayas or the Himadri . The average height of this range is 6000m . MT Everest, the worlds highest peak ( 8848)m is in Nepal . MT Kanchenjunga ( 8598 ) m in Sikkim is the highest peak of the India Himalayas in India .

The Himachal or the lesser Himalayan Range lies to the south of the Himadri Range . The average altitude of the peaks varies between 1500m and 3000m with some peaks rising to 5000m . Eg Pir Panjal Range in Kashmir and Dhaula Dhar Range in Himachal Pradesh are part of the Himachal Ranges.

The Siwalik or the Outer Himalayan Range is the southernmost range of Himalayas . It forms the foothills of the Himalayas and has an altitude of less than 1500m . The hills of this range are narrow , discontinuous and merge with the other ranges . These are made up of unconsolidated rocks . These hills are well developed in the western part of the Himalayas .
