'Awful lot' here means that the moong that were produced were in large numbers.

EXPLANATION:

    The companions of the writer wanted to spray pesticide over the plants but the writer opposed it. He did want to grow his crop using chemicals and pesticides instead wanted his crops to be grown in fertile soil.

   Just because of the purity of the soil they got high yield of moong. This was why the writer told that he grew an awful lot of moong.
