Forgiveness and Reconciliation in The Tempest. ... Prospero insists that those who wronged him suffer for their crimes, before he offers them his forgiveness, even if it means innocent and noble men, like Gonzalo, suffer as well.

Answer:

Theme of Forgiveness in

The Tempest

The theme of forgiveness and reconciliation is the striking feature of the play The Tempest.

Prospero , the Duke of Milan has been cruelly wronged by his treacherous and ambitious brother, Antonio.

Antonio joins hands with Alonso , the king of Naples in order to unsurp the dukedom of his brother, Prospero.

Prospero who developed interest in the study of philosophy and magic became indifferent to the management of state affairs.

so , he entrusted the management of the state of affairs to Antonio.

Taking advantage of Prospero's disinterestedness, he conspired with Alonso in order to expel Prospero from his Dukedom, so he cast him adrift with 3 year old daughter, Miranda in a Rotten and dilapidated boat.

Then also Prospero forgives his treacherous and ambitious brother Antonio than he forgives Alonso who is repentant due to the loss of his son Ferdinand and he also forgive Sebastian for his conspiracy against Alonso and Gonzalo

Thus, we find that Prospero's forgiveness is solemn and judicial and has in it something abstract and impersonal.

The fact is that Prospero is a noble man and does not want to act against his noble nature.

hope it may help you...
