The theme of the Rime
of Ancient Mariner is ‘Justice and Monitoring’ of the deeds of men and women by
the Divine Laws of Providence. All misdeeds are punished; however, sincere
repentance and penance frees the offender of the consequences of misdeeds. The
ancient mariner killed the albatross for which he and his fellow sailors had to
suffer. But the mariner felt truly regretful of his misdeed. The other sailors
on the contrary kept changing their beliefs and ideas. This was their hypocrisy.
They paid a heavy price for this as the Providence punishes hypocrisy severely.
However, the mariner on account of his confession, regret, and penance survived
till the end.
