Where there is a will, there is a
way to solve a tough and blocking problem. The blocking problem we are facing
at the moment can be solved if only we are strong at will and decide to pursue
it till it's resolved.
This idiom is demonstrated by the character Sher
Singh in the story "Journey by Night". Sher Singh is a boy of a
farmer living in a remote village. His younger brother Kunwar fell seriously
ill and needed medical attention. The nearest hospital was 50 km away in
Kalaghat. In the absence of his father, he decided to carry his younger brother
by himself to Kalaghat.
He had to cross a jungle and two rivers to
reach the main road. He crossed the first shallow river with not so much of
difficulty. The journey through the jungle at night was very difficult. He
stopped short of stepping on a snake. Then he encountered a herd of
elephants and was fortunate to escape from them. Then the second river
was flowing fast. The water was very cold coming from molten ice/snow.
His brother was heavy on his shoulders. He had to walk with great difficulty,
through the river. After that, he had seen a tiger's footprint in the
sand. He was undeterred in his endeavour to take Kunwar to the hospital.
Finally he got a lift in a bullock-cart and
subsequently in a truck. He took Kunwar to the hospital. Then he searched and
found some work to get some money to buy/cook some food. Finally, the
doctor was surprised to know of the feat of Sher Singh. He assured him that his
brother would live.
The story of the brave boy demonstrates clearly
that if one is determined and dedicated, one can surely reach one's goal
(though after some time). This is a short story by Norah Burke.
