Then and now: Talk to your grand parents and other elderly people in the neighbourhood. Find out the sewage disposal systems available to them. You can also write letters to people living in far off places to get more information. Prepare a brief report on the information you collected.

In the earlier days, during the time of our grandparents, sewage disposal systems were quite straight-forward. Sewage was normally directed into the open fields or to one end of the house compound, where it is absorbed into the soil.

The sewage quality during those days was also different as there was very little chemicals, plastics, or toxic materials present in it, making it suitable for plants and trees.

Solid wastes which were mostly organic in nature were normally buried in deep pits where it would get converted into organic matter.
