Answer: The speaker made the ‘mistake’ by asking the girl what it was like outside.
According to the narrator, it was a ‘mistake’ because he was blind and was playing the game of pretending he was not blind. He wanted to hide his blindness from the girl. In course of conversation the narrator asked the girl how the outside look like.
The girl was blind. So she did not understand that the man was blind. But she also did not disclose that she was blind. The girl immediately helped him to get rid of his doubt by asking him to look out of the window.
The speaker moved easily along the berth and felt for the window ledge. He made a pretence of studying the landmark and after a while resumed conversation with the girl.
