Given,

Total students = 1000

Number of columns  = Number of rows

To Find,

How many students are left =?

Solution,

Let the number of rows and columns  = x

Number of students  = x * x = x^2

According to the question,

x^2 < = 1000

The perfect square just before 1000 is 960

x^ 2 = 961\\x = \sqrt{961} \\x = 31

Number of rows  =  Number of columns = 31

Students left  = 1000 - 961 = 39

Hence, if students are made to stand in such a manner that the number of columns and number of rows of students is the same then 32 students are left.
