x+y = 40

3x+10y=295

x+y = 40 .....1

3x+10y = 295 ....2

Multiply equation 1 by 10

10x + 10y = 400 .....3

Subtract eq 2 from eq 3

10x - 3x + 10y - 10y = 400 - 295

7x = 105

x = 105÷7 = 15 Answer
