The answer is 33.6 liters

GIVEN

8 filling pipes each capable of filling a cisterns alone in 5 minute and 6 empting pipes each capable of empting a cistern in 6 minutes. All the pipes are opened together and as a result, tank fills 24 liters of water per minute.

TO FIND

The capacity of tank.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

It is given,

Capability of 1 pipe filling a cistern = 5 minutes

Capacity of pipe filling in 1 minute = 1/5th of cistern

Capacity of 8 pipes = 8/5

Now,

Capacity of pipe emptying a cistern in 1 minute = 1/6

Capacity of 6 pipes = 6/6

1 minute work for all pipes together;

8/5 - 1

7/5

Capacity of tank = (5/7) × 24 = 33.6 litres.

Hence, The answer is 33.6 liters
