There are seven essential components or substances called nutrients in our
food. These are Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Fiber (Roughage)
and water. Of these carbohydrates, proteins and fats are the three main components.
Carbohydrates and fats provide energy to the body. Proteins help in the growth and
repair of the body. Vitamins and minerals are known as protective foods. They
protect our body against diseases, help in proper functioning of our body and in
maintaining good health. Roughage or dietary fibre is the fibrous part of vegetables
and fruits. It helps the body to get rid of undigested food. Water is the medium
