let larger no. be = x
another be = y
ATQ
x + y = 85. (1)
x = y +13. (2)
put eq (2) in (1)
then y+13+y = 85
2y = 85-13
2y = 72
y = 36
then x = 49
another be = y
ATQ
x + y = 85. (1)
x = y +13. (2)
put eq (2) in (1)
then y+13+y = 85
2y = 85-13
2y = 72
y = 36
then x = 49

The smaller number is 36
The greater number is 49.
Given: There are two numbers whose sum is 85. The greater number is 13 is more than the smaller.
To Find: The numbers.
Solution:
Let the smaller number be 'x'.
It is said that the greater number is 13 more than the smaller.
So, the greater number is = x + 13
The sum of the numbers is = 85
From the above conditions, we can frame an equation;
x + x + 13 = 85
⇒ 2x = 85 - 13
⇒ 2x = 72
⇒ x = 72 / 2
= 36
So, the smaller number is 36
And the greater number is = x + 13 = 36 + 13
= 49
Hence,
The smaller number is 36
The greater number is 49.
