After independence, people had not the problem of freedom struggle. People were better off. But still there were problems of unemployment and poverty.

People wanted to have as many children as possible, as they looked forward to having a male child. So they tried more children if the elder children were girls.

Further they wanted their sons to take care of them during their old age. They wanted their family to grow and spread their family tradition and prestige.

During many decades people came in from Sri Lanka, Tibet, Nepal and Bangladesh to India.

Till late 1970s the family planning was not much popular.
