Question :

There is a 3 digit number . the second digit is 4 times as big as the third digit while the first digit is 3 less than the second digit , what is the number?

Solution :

Let , the number be

m = 100 x + 10 y + z

then,

y = 4 z .....eqn(1)

x = y - 3

(using eqn(1))

x = 4z - 3

Now,

we have

first digit, x = 4z - 3

second digit , y = 4z

third digit, z = z

Taking z = 1

first digit = 4(1) - 3 = 1

second digit = 4(1) = 4

third digit = 1

so, the number will be

141

Taking z = 2

first digit = 4(2) - 3 = 5

second digit = 4(2) = 8

third digit = 2

so the number will be

258.

(On taking z = 3

second digit will become 12

that is not possible . )
