There is a popular story that one day, when Newton was sitting under an apple tree, an apple fell

on his head, and this led him to think about a force which came into play though there is no

actual physical contact. Probably the most correct version of the story is that Newton, upon

observing an apple fall from a tree, began to think along the following lines :- The falling apple

is getting accelerated; there must be a force acting on the apple. If the force can reach to the top

of the highest level of the tree might it not reach even further (all the way o moon!).

By such reasoning, Newton came to the conclusion that any two objects, in the universe, exert a

force of attraction on each other.

(a) Name the force which is responsible for the downward motion of the apple.

(b) Is this force, asked in (a), contact or non-contact force? Give reason to justify your answer.

(c) Is there any force acting along upward direction on an apple falling through air? If yes, then

name this force.

(d) State any two factors on which the force mentioned in part(c) depends.

Answer:

1) gravity

The force which is responsible for his downward motion is the gravity.

2)Friction is a type of contact force only. Applied Force: Force which is applied to an object by another object.

3)An apple in free fall accelerates toward the Earth with a free fall acceleration, g. The force of the apple on the Earth also causes the Earth to accelerate ...

4)Moment of a force about a point depends on the following two factors:(a)The magnitude of the force applied and.(b)The distance of the line of action .
