The reasons are-
1. Because of its electronic configuration hydrogen behaves like a alkali earth metal.
2. On the other hand, just like halogens, hydrogen also exist as diatomic molecules and also combines with metals and non metals to form covalent compounds.

1) the atomic number of hydrogen is 1 so it should occupy the first place in perodic table
2)but hydrogen also has chemical similarity with elements of group 1&17
Therefore the position of hydrogen in periodic table is still not confirmed
