This statement hints at the fact that Ranga had been bowled over by Ratna's beauty ever since he had seen her at the author's house. His views about marriage had changed all of a sudden. He was desperate to get married to Ratna. He didn't hesitate confessing the fact to the author, when the latter asked him how he felt about Ratna.

Answer:
After their visit to Shastri, the narrator disclose to Ranga that Ratna was not married and he has some misunderstanding about it. The narrator could not believe that Ranga had been thinking of her. He asked him to confirm it. It was then that Ranga frankly admitted that the Shastri had told the truth that he liked Ratna. So after all he believed in shastras
and said that "there is a greater truth in then we can imagine."
