when enough carbonic acid is formed it neutralizes the lime water, which is a base and makes the solution an acid. Therefore with the phenolphthalein, the color disappears in the now acidic solution. THIS IS BECAUSE EXCESS CO2 (carbon dioxide) IS SUPPLIED .
Hence the like water well first turn milky then and then back to normal color when excess carbon dioxide is supplied .
