As a citizen, we enjoy the fundamental rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution. However, we often forget the fundamental duties which go hand in hand with the rights.
We often crib about not getting our rights when, in fact, we hardly pay attention to the duties we ought to fulfill. Consider the following example. It is the duty of every citizen to uphold the dignity of our cultural heritage and to protect and preserve it. We hardly work in this direction. We feel its our birthright to scribble on the walls of the monuments and to litter public property. We then complain about the right to enjoy a clean environment. Isn't it our moral duty to keep our surroundings clean and protect our heritage?
Remember, we have not inherited our heritage from our ancestors, we have borrowed it from our children.
There is thus, no right without a duty.

Our Constitution guarantees us certain fundamental rights, but it is our duty as law-abiding citizens that we do not misuse these rights and ensure that our fellow citizens equally enjoy their rights and they are not infringed upon. For instance, the right to freedom of speech allows us to voice our free opinions, as long as what we say does not become inflammatory and speak ill of others or say things that have prejudicial undertones. Similarly, the right to education ensures education for all, not a select group. There are other rights like right to freedom of religion, right to constitutional remedies etc which gives all Indian citizens equal rights in these and other respects; we must not only enjoy these, but must also make sure that others also do so. It is incumbent upon us to ensure that we enjoy our rights as much as perform our duty in helping others to do the same.
