Understanding the question :

We have been told there was a garden which had 240 roses and in that 50% were red. And we are asked to find the number of roses that are not red.

We know that percentage is in parts of 100. We are told that 50% are red . So what percentage is not red ?

Answer :

Let us find the percentage of roses not red :

100 % - 50 % = 50 %

So , we have got the percentage of roses that are not red.

Now let us find the number of roses that are not red.

Total roses : 240

Total percentage : 100

Percentage not red : 50%

Formula to calculate percentage :

\large{\boxed{\tt{ \dfrac{Percentage}{100} \times Total}}}

So , using the same formula we will find out the number of roses that are not red.

\longrightarrow{\tt{ \dfrac{50}{100}\times 240}}

\longrightarrow{\tt{\cancel{ \dfrac{50}{100}} \times 240}}

\longrightarrow{\tt{ \dfrac{1}{2}\times 240}}

\longrightarrow{\tt{ \cancel{\dfrac{1}{2} \times 240}}}

\large{\boxed{\tt{ 120}}}
