Given,

Two candidates in an election.

Winner candidate received 60% of the votes and won by 288 votes.

To Find,

The number of votes given or cast to the winning candidate.

Solution,

To solve the given mathematical problem we first need to assume the total number of votes casted.

Let total number of votes be x

As we know, winner got 60% of x

∴ The other candidate got = 100% - 60%

                                            = 40% of x

As the difference between the winner and loser are 288 votes.

∴ 0.60x - 0.40x = 288

⇒ 0.20x = 288

⇒ x = 1440

Now, we got the total number of votes (x) = 1440

So, the votes casted to the winning candidate will be:

⇒ 60% of 1440

⇒ 864 votes

Hence, the number of votes casted to the winning candidate is 864 votes.
