Step 1: They told us, "Why you are abusing me today. "

Step 2: They told us why he/she was abusing me that day.

EXPLANATION:

So in the first step I've changed the position of the subject and the verb, transforming the sentence into an assertive sentence.

And on the last step I've just changed it into indirect speech.
