We joined her at dinner, the three us of dining on chicken strips and marinated fresh green beans. First, we chatted casually, and though I knew her international prominence, did not bring up the bizarre nature of her occupation. Then, I stared at her large gold ring, made entirely of interwoven human skulls. She held out her hand to show it, and asked if I wanted to see the buckle of the belt on her denim skirt. It was made of exactly 88 tiny gold skulls.

That was that! The conversation that followed was not abashed with the most fascinating person I have ever met Betty Pat Gatliff a world forensic "skull" expert who was in Davenport to put a face on a 3,000-year-old mummy at the Putnam Museum, and such an authority that she was chosen to recreate the face of King Tut.

I wasn't interested in mummies, though. I wanted to know of her help in identifying crime victims. Ghoulish, perhaps, but I sought to learn how she can take a skull and with clay and deft hands, turn it into a face that may solve a murder.

"I've handled 213 unidentified crime victim cases. By molding faces with clay on their bare skulls, have identified three out of four and that led to solving most of the crimes," she said.

She talked pleasantly, with the light southern accent of an Oklahoman, being on the staff of the University of Oklahoma. Her hands were soft, having worked with oily clay; her grip firm, having rolled and kneaded coils of clay into noses and ears and lips onto bare skulls, some crushed, some fragmented, some bullet-holed.

Hope it helps...
