The Civil Disobedience Movement was started under the leadership of M.K. Gandhi in 1930. The main idea behind it was to defy and break the laws made by the British. It began with the salt March.

Hi. Some main feature of the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930 are as follows......

1. This movement was different from the Non Co-operation movement of 1921-22. People were asked by Gandhiji not only to refuse cooperation but also to break colonial rules and laws. Thousands of people in the country broke the salt law, manufactured the salt law, and demonstrated in front of government factories. Peasants refused to pay reveneues, village officials resigned and many forest people violated forest laws.

2. Different social groups joined the movement for different reasons. The peasant communities in the countrySide thought that it was a fight against high reveneus charged by the government and they joined it in the hope that the taxes and reveneues would be lowered. The bussiness class joined it as they wanted to protest against import of goods to expand their own industries.

3. The large scale participation of women in the movement made this movement effective. Many of them even went jail. Women, moved by Gandhiji's thought began to see service to the nation as the sacred duty of women.
