Microbial Growth. Microorganisms, specifically bacteria, molds, and yeasts, can cause food to spoil. For example, microorganisms that break down fats in unsalted butter can causeit to become rancid. ... Some microorganisms that are naturally present on the surface of foods grown in the ground can also cause foodspoilage.

How can we prevent spoilage of food

Preservation usually involves preventing the growth of bacteria, fungi (such as yeasts), and other microorganisms, as well as retarding the oxidation of fats which cause rancidity.A number of methods of prevention can be used that can either totally prevent, delay, or otherwise reduce food spoilage.
