Oh, this is one experience that I will never forget in my life - first day of hostel life.
It was the year 2001. I was brought up in a very small town in TamilNadu and had been to Chennai only a very few times before that. We were only two girls in a room for 4. Other two had not checked in yet.
We were excited about starting college and whiled away the time talking about our native place, school and expectations from the college, etc.,
Soon, it was night and we both set our alarm clocks for 5 in the morning(orientation session in college was scheduled only at 10am) , wished good night to each other and tried to sleep.
This is where the night gets more memorable. At first, I thought I was hearing some vague noise. Then, it was clear - it was the sound of an infant crying. Not a toddler, but the wails of a new born baby. I waited, to hear somebody pacifying the child. If I can hear a child, I should be able to hear an adult too, I thought. But alas, it was only the baby that was crying.
I was now uncomfortable and tried shifting positions. The wails grew louder and louder now. Nobody seemed to be comforting the baby. What is a baby doing in a college hostel, I thought. I was new to the campus and did not know if any staff quarters was near by. I stopped pretending to be asleep and sat upright. I saw my room mate, also sitting on her bed with the a confused and helpless look on her face. We saw each other and understood one thing - we were very scared.
We spent the rest of the night, discussing where that baby would be and why is nobody bothering to feed the baby or comfort it. There was no pattern to the baby's cries, it started and stopped just like that. We did not know the hostel warden’s room or literally anybody in the whole block to report this.
I don't remember how and when we slept, but after getting ready to college the next morning, on our way we reported this to our hostel telephone attender. She dismissed this off coolly and said,
Oh, the sound. It is the hostel cat, you know. It is a forest breed and sounds like an infant.
Needless to say, we were not amused.
