Ice is a solid. The force of attraction between the molecules of a solid is very strong. The molecules can only vibrate about their positions. When ice is heated, the heat energy increases the movement of molecules. They vibrate faster and can move about more freely. They overcome the force of attraction between them. When this happens, solid ice changes into liquid state. The force of attraction between the molecules of a liquid is not as strong as in solids. When the water is heated more the molecules receive more heat energy. Their movement ceases until they are completely free to move. The liquid has now changed into vapour called vapourization.
