Sandstone is a clastic (rocks composed of broken pieces of older rocks) sedimentary rock formed by binding sand sized grains to form a solid rock. The main constituent of sandstone and shale is Quartz. Calcium carbonate, silica, or iron has been added to the water that is in contact with the sand grains. These minerals then grow crystals in the space around the sand grains. As the crystals grow and fill the gap, the sand grain becomes a solid rock. Quartz is the most abundant mineral of granite and other felsic igneous rocks. It is also found schist, gneiss, quartzite and other metamorphic rocks.
